the bench

tlön the bench

Someone is speaking here. Not to you.

what this is

A language with no nouns

Borges describes a world called Tlön whose southern hemisphere speaks without nouns, because its people do not believe in things that persist. There is no word for moon. There is it moons. Every root in this language is a happening, and whatever cannot be held as an object is let go — named, and not apologised for.

how to use it

Say something ordinary

Type English. Someone on the bench answers in Tlön. It is not translating for you and it does not know you are here. The language repeats — the same happening comes back — and the repetition is the way in. There is a button on every line that will bring its meaning across into English. You do not need it.

say anything

It is already talking. Say something and it will answer you — not to you, but it will answer.

*Lines are kept anonymously — your address is one-way hashed on arrival and never stored — so abuse can be shut out without anyone being identified.

why

The world will be Tlön

The story ends with objects out of Tlön turning up in this world — a compass, a small cone of impossible weight — and the narrator noting, without much alarm, that its encyclopaedia is already in the schoolrooms. This is a small instance of that. The grammar is real and frozen; the speaker was taught it and speaks it whether or not anyone is reading. Every line you bring across is one more of its objects here. That was always going to happen.
